Ideology and radicalisation: perspectives from Belgium, Sweden, Egypt and the Gulf

27.03.2018

On the 27th March 2018, the European Foundation for Democracy, in partnership with TRENDS Research & Advisory,  hosted a panel discussion at the European Parliament on ideology and radicalisation, to hear perspectives from Belgium, Sweden and other countries. Recent reports from the Belgian and Swedish governments have highlighted that ideology has a role to play in the radicalisation process that can lead individuals to commit acts of violence and terrorism. Our guest speakers will provide insights from Belgium, Sweden, Egypt and the Gulf and make recommendations to EU policy makers on how to develop a deeper understanding of the role ideology plays in the radicalisation process and the best ways to address this.

The event was hosted by MEPs Mr Lars Adaktusson (EPP/S), Gerard Deprez (ALDE/B) and Patricia Lalonde (ALDE/F) and the speakers for the event were; Mr Aje Carlbom, University of Malmö; Mr Magdi Abdelhadi, broadcaster and former BBC Arab affairs analyst; Dr Richard Burchill, TRENDS Research and Advisory. The event was moderated by EFD’s Ms Roberta Bonazzi.
