The COVID-19 crisis, amplified by an interconnected and globalised world, is a stark reminder that no country can live in perfect isolation. While Asia will remain an important economic partner for Europe and the West in general, the pandemic has also brought to light the intrinsic perils of relationships with autocratic countries. The discussion will explore the broad regional context beyond the pandemic, with a particular focus on opportunities to engage with partners that share the same liberal-democratic principles.

Disinformation campaigns promoting anti-EU / anti-West messages during the COVID-19 crisis have also been targeting the candidate countries to the European Union. Our panelists will offer their analysis and perspectives on Russia and China’s strategies to gain influence in the Western Balkans and Turkey. These campaigns are a serious threat for the EU, the U.S. and NATO; our panel of experts will discuss how and why they must be tackled.

ITALIAN - Discussion on disinformation activities in Italy carried out by state and non-state actors from Russia and China with a view to influencing the Italian and European policy debate during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The discussion focused on the dynamics and the impact of propaganda and disinformation campaigns during the COVID-19 crisis and the threats they represent beyond the current times. Experts raised awareness of the importance of becoming informed and responsible actors online. The discussion highlighted the need for increased transatlantic cooperation to address and counter disinformation efforts and prevent their destructive impact.

While the COVID-19 crisis has further amplified the magnitude of the disinformation phenomenon worldwide, liberal democracies need to identify tools and mechanisms that can support effective remedies. This webinar explores how the promotion of independent, critical, pluralistic and professional journalism can represent a remedy against disinformation by providing sound and fact-based information.

The European Foundation for Democracy launched their report on 'Refugees in Europe' the project reviews integration practices and policies in seven countries. We spoke to John Duhig, Senior Policy Advisor, about the report. The report focused on the experience of Syrian refugees. EFD interviewed refugees, NGOs and state actors to see what works - and also bad practice. It is important to know who the NGOs are and what the funding goes towards.
