Paris: Debate on Islam in France

17.07.2013

"Is there a conflict between the values of the French Republic and the values of Islam?” This question was put to a panel of prominent Muslim academics and politicians at a conference in Paris organized by EFD Senior Fellow Toufik Bouarfa and Nadir Ouilain. The event brought together 40 civil society activists, journalists and politicians for a frank and open discussion.

Participants included Rachide Benzine, author of an anthology of new thinkers in Islam; the founder of a magazine for urban youth, RESPECT MAG; and senior members of France's major political parties. One key theme was the lack of awareness about the diversity of Islamic thought, not only among the broader French public, but among Muslims themselves -- which is precisely why EFD considers events of this kind to be so crucial.

The debate was held in French and can be viewed here.
