About the speakers:
Laurence Bindner is a founding partner at the JOS Project. Her fields of expertise cover the dissemination of jihadist content online, jihadist propaganda and rhetorics. Her analysis also focuses on terrorism financing, the links between terrorism financing and illicit trade, and the quantification of jihadist networks in France and the EU. Member of the CTED (Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate) Global Research Network of the UN.
Pieter Van Ostaeyen has been analysing the conflict in Syria since the outset in 2011. In 2012 he began reporting on foreign fighters and extremist groups such as Jabhat an-Nusra, Ahrar as-Sham, Jund al-Aqsa and the Islamic State. In 2015 he published his first book 'From the Crusades to the Caliphate' ('Van Kruistochten tot Kalifaat') with Pelckmans. He studied Medieval History with a specialisation in the history of the Crusades (KULeuven 1999) and Arabic and Islamic Studies, focusing on the history of Salah ad-Din al-Ayyubi and the Assassins (KULeuven 2003).
