The ‘return of the Caliphate’

On 24 September 2014, the European Foundation for Democracy hosted a closed-door policy briefing on the threat and implications of the Caliphate, as announced by the so-called Islamic State. The speaker was EFD Senior Fellow Dr. Valentina Colombo, who examined the concept of Caliphate and analysed the latest developments in Syria and Iraq, including the implications for global and national security, as well as the internal debate within Islamist groups on perceptions of how to achieve the Caliphate.

Valentina also teaches Geopolitics in the Islamic World at the European University in Rome. She previously taught Islamic Studies and Arabic language and literature at the University of Bologna.
