Voices on the Rise exhibition arrives in the Hague

21.06.2012 - 06.07.2012

From 21st June to 6th July, Voices on the Rise: Afghan Women Making the News explores the lives of Afghan women from a perspective rarely seen. This photojournalism exhibition looks at the role professional Afghan women play in working towards the reconstruction of their country in a range of fields -- journalism, the arts, government, politics, human rights and others.  Following Paris, the United Kingdom, Canada, Indonesia, Belgium, the exhibition continues its international tour to The Hague in June 2012. The exhibition is dedicated to Afghan women -- unsung heroes who are working to help rebuild their country and who are fighting to support the emergence of a more egalitarian society there. The rights of these women are protected by the 2004 Afghan Constitution, yet they continue to labor under the weight of tradition and face ever-increasingly challenges in their day-to-day lives.

Participation in civil society, the media, the arts and politics, however, does not accurately reflect the lives of the vast majority of Afghan women, particularly in rural areas.  The women portrayed in this exhibition are pioneers and their spirit and determination show that, in spite of the challenges, Afghan women’s voices are, more than ever, on the rise.

The European Foundation for Democracy and the Embassy of the United States of America bring Voices on the Rise: Afghan Women Making the News to The Hague, from 6th June to 6th July, 2012.

Location:  Atrium, Town Hall (Spui 70, 2511 BT, The Hague).

Times:  Monday to Friday 7.00 – 19.00 hrs, Saturday 9.30 – 17.00 hrs.
