Al Jazeera’s Crusades. Relaunching jihad

EFD Senior Fellow Valentina Colombo comments on the imminent release of a new documentary produced by the Al Jazeera Documentary Channel on the Crusades. The aim is to present this period from an Arab perspective, as the Director of the channel, Ahmed Mahfouz, explains. However, Colombo highlights that this initiative may be inappropriate since the word ‘Crusader’ today has a very specific meaning both in the Arab and Islamic world. Last March, in fact, the new ISIS leader in Libya, Abdel Qader Al-Najdi, stated that France, the UK and Italy are creating a ‘…coalition of Crusaders…’ that will fight against ISIS.
