Headscarves and burkinis limit women’s freedom – it is not always a matter of free choice

EFD Senior Fellow Dr. Valentina Colombo is interviewed by Il Giornale di Sicilia on the latest bans imposed by the French authorities on Muslim women wearing 'burkinis'.

"Burkinis should be examined from two different view points. If it allows women to participate in the Olympics, I can accept them. (..) On the other hand, a burkini used as a veil is only the tip of the iceberg in a series of practices which aim to control women and their bodies" added Dr. Colombo.
