PM+: EU lacking effective response to extremist online propaganda

30 September 2015

Tehmina Kazi, director of British Muslims for Secular Democracy and a Fellow at the European Foundation for Democracy, writes about the difficulty in countering online extremism and explains why vulnerable individuals have been so susceptible to their messages. In the article, Tehmina stresses the importance of combating non-violent extremism with the same tenacity as violent extremism and provides several examples for how an effective counter-narrative campaign should do so.

Tehmina also proposes several concrete recommendations to the EU and policy makers, such as expanding groups and programmes aimed at educating and building up resilience against hateful extremist rhetoric. Finally, Tehmina calls on the European Counter-Narrative Centre in Brussels to map counter-narrative activities in Europe so that collaboration efforts can be improved among these organisations.
