Regeni was exposed to danger by activist professors

03 March 2016

Following her article on the murder of the Italian researcher Giulio Regeni, EFD Senior Fellow Valentina Colombo publishes another opinion piece on the issue. She highlights the ideological and academic background of Regeni’s professors, who are closely linked to the Muslim Brotherhood and she states that part of the responsibility for his death must be attributed to their imprudence in sending him to such a dangerous environment. Colombo also gives her hypothesis on Regeni’s murder: since it is obscure to believe that the Egyptian government would have tortured and killed an Italian citizen, a possible explanation would be that the widening of his network in a context which is extremely monitored and anxious to protect its secrets might have triggered an alarm within certain opposition circles. In other words, Giulio Regeni might have been a foreign citizen that had too much information.
