The war is being fought on social media

03 August 2014

EFD Programme Director Ahmad Mansour speaks with journalist Teresa Eder about anti-Semitism among young people with migrant backgrounds in Austria – a phenomenon which has become increasingly pronounced amid the renewed conflict in the Middle East. Ahmad points out that anti-Jewish tendencies among Austria's young Muslims cannot be viewed as an 'imported problem', even if their prejudices are closely connected with older generations who were born in other countries. He also warns that enemy figures are often established early on and get passed on automatically to the next generation. Ahmad points out that this is particularly concerning in the age of social media, where youngsters frequently encounter highly emotive and over-simplified content, and calls for schools and authorities to engage with the conflict in the Middle East so that prejudices can be challenged and broken down.
