Mongolia should not fall under Russian influence: what’s at stake for the EU?
As the European Union advances its strategic autonomy agenda, ensuring long-term security—both economic and military—has become a core strategic priority. With Russia now posing an existential threat, the EU’s confrontation with Moscow is no longer confined to Ukraine or even the European continent. It is a global challenge, demanding vigilance far beyond Europe’s immediate neighbourhood.
One of the regions where Russia is actively seeking to expand its influence is Central and East Asia. A key country in this context is Mongolia, due to its geostrategic location, significant reserves of critical raw materials, and most importantly, its democratic political system.
Although often overlooked in Europe, Mongolia merits greater strategic consideration. In an era marked by the rise of authoritarian regimes, the EU has a growing need for democratic and reliable partners across the globe. Mongolia fits this profile and should be viewed as a strategic ally in maintaining a rules-based international order.
